My recent assignment was to illustrate an editorial for class. The article was a long rant about the decline of the economy. I ended up doing these two pieces that don't really relate. I think I did these more for myself. Ha.
The tuxedo cat is a metaphor for the "fat cats" in financial trouble who wished they could go back in time.
The cat is alone and helpless, as even the idea of phoning for help is out of his reach.
I have been using cats for allegorical purposes too often. I don't want to be known as the cat lady. I need a new animal!

A quickie from my sketchbook because I haven't scanned recently.
And check out MAPSU, Mothers Against Peeing Standing Up. I thought about them whilst cleaning the bathroom yesterday.
This semester I'm taking a class called 'The New York Observer Project.' It's pretty much a real life editorial experience. Every week we get a book review (most of the time only a brief synopsis of the book from Amazon) and we get about 5 days to finish our piece and send it in. The editor of the NY Observer chooses a piece every week to be published. This is the latest book review:

Week 2: This was a book of Jewish folklore. It was about 12 of the 36 souls that the world needs at all time to sustain itself. I really want to read this book (Barnes and Nobles outing, anyone?).
All in all, my professor said that my concepts were good but I needed better technical work. I tried to not take it as 'Melissa, your ideas are good but you can't draw.' So I'm just going to work harder on the next one.
Happy February!
